IT Education – My Internet Is Out!

IT Education – My Internet Is Out!

Have you ever been working late at night right before that big project is due and, WHAM!, something happens to your internet and you can’t complete your research or send off that critical last-minute message? If so, here are a few tips that might help you fix things yourself, avoid those “wonderful” calls to tech support, and rest easy:

Check Your Computer First!

First, the problem could be with your computer and not the internet at all. A good technician rules out every possibility logically, so the first step will be to simply restart your computer and check the connection. While the computer is rebooting, it is always a good idea to make sure you network cable is plugged in securely or, in the case of a wireless network, to insure your computer is properly connecting your wireless network when it comes back up.

Check Your Network Equipment!

If after doing this, your computer is still unable to get online, the next step is to check your network equipment. We cannot count how many times and places simply performing this step has saved the day, so without further adieu, here’s what to do: Unplug the power from your modem (and router if you have one – if not, contact us and we’ll explain the benefits!). Once both devices have been unplugged, count to ten and plug them back in, starting with the modem first. Insure the modem is completely booted (give it about 30 seconds) and then plug in the router. Once both devices are ready to go, run back to your computer (be careful in the dark!) and check things out.

Call The Internet Provider!

If after rebooting your computer, modem, and router, you are still unable to get to the internet, it is time to call your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and have them test the line. Once you get them on the phone, tell them you are a computer technician and have already tested your end – this will save you time, and lots of repeating yourself. The technician will proceed to test the line and send out a repair technician at no charge to you if he finds a problem in their connection.  Here’s some useful links to help people near me with contacting their ISP:

Hawaiian Telcom(877) 482-2211

Spectrum Internet | (800) 892-4357

Spectrum Business Internet | (855) 293-7415

or, Call Your Friendly IT Guy.

The last step in this process, should the rest fail, is to call your local computer and information technology experts.  They should be able to isolate the issue and get it resolved in very short order.  Don’t know a guy?  Give Nu’u Computers a call ((808) 866-4339) and we’ll get you back online in no time.  You can even let us deal with calling the internet provider so you don’t have to deal with the hassle!
